Our Summer Spanish Programme at a Glance

Mission Statement: Our programme is designed to give young students the most positive and unforgettable experience that living in a foreign country can offer. That visiting students acquire language learning, cultural understanding, and lasting friendships is our overriding goal.

New languages and traditions, new ideas and ways of life, new sights and sounds, these are the experiences that these young learners will remember and carry with them for a lifetime. And our job is to ensure that students reach the full potential of their stay here in a secure and supportive environment.

Location: Mataró is a small coastal city 20 miles north of Barcelona. It is a safe, quiet, easy-to-get-around-in middle-class beach town without many of the distractions of larger cities.

Course & Activities: our programme combines classroom study with cultural and outdoor activities. Students study and take part in activities with international students of the same age and withlocal students who participate in after-class activities, giving international students a unique opportunity to experience the native culture and traditions from the inside out with their Spanish peers.

Accommodation: students live nearby our language center with host families who have children the same or near to same age as visiting students. Meals are provided by the host family.

Course length: BAI Languages offers students two-week Spanish & Activity programmes* with additional third or fourth weeks possible.

A Brief Summary of Daily Activities:

Spanish language courses run daily, Monday through Friday, from 9:00-12:00 at our international center. Students are tested on the first day of class and assigned to an appropriate level in an air-conditioned classroom. Teachers are highly qualified native-speakers of Spanish and class sizes are never larger than fifteen students.

After class each day, students participate in monitored activities with other students from our programme until at least 6:00 pm. (These could be American, Swedish, French, Japanese, or students of other countries, plus local Spanish students.) Many of these activities are centered on the Mataró beach, a short five-minute walk from the language center. They include snorkeling, sailing, swimming, beach sports (soccer, volleyball & others), and barbeques; visits to aquatic parks, the cinema, theatre, bowling, and museums; and three half-day trips to Barcelona.

Full-day Saturday trips include:

  • 1) Costa Brava: Figueras (the Dalí Museum), Girona, and Tossa de Mar.
  • 2) Barcelona, a bus tour that includes visits to Sagrada Familia, the Gothic Quarter, Parc Güell, and the Barcelona Football Stadium and souvenir shop.
  • 3) Port Aventura, a theme park about an hour-and-half south of Mataró—site of the world’s most electrifying roller coaster ride.
There are monitors for all activities with a maximum ratio of 15 students to 1 monitor.

The price for two-, three-, and four-week courses includes host family accommodation (three meals a day); classes; books & materials; insurance; medical coverage; all daily activities, including transportation, entry fees to museums, cinemas, theatres, aquatic park, Port Aventura, etc. It does not include air fare or airport transfers.
