Les Santes: The Summer Festival of Mataró

Gegantada (Giants): Giants measuring up to six metres tall parade through the streets of the city followed by their dwarf sidekicks.

Dìada Castellera (Human Castles):  An exhibition by the best human castle clubs in the world. Standing on one and others’ shoulders participants raise these human castles up to as many as nine “storeys.”

Cap a la Crida: The festival’s biggest night begins with all participating troupes converging on the city hall. These include fire-breathing dragons and their accompanying drummers, giants and their dwarf sidekicks, firework spouting bulls accompanied by bagpipers, eagles with their minstrels, and fire-toting devils straight from hell dancing to the beat of their drummers.

Desvetllament Bellugós,  Escarpada Negra Nit and Gran Ruixada: A slow march down main street behind the family of giants, accompanied by singing and chanting. This is followed by live music and dancing in the town’s main squares. Next up is a mobile fireworks display where participants trail behind dancing devils, dragons, bulls, and eagles. Then everyone marches up the main street to the beat of dozens of drummers until arriving at the Central Park. There they listen to music, dance, and cool off by running beneath the spraying hoses of the city’s fire department.

Castell de Focs (Firework Display):  From the city’s beach and waterfront watch a magnificent display of fireworks over the Mediterranean Sea.
